About
The Grievous Angel is an independent imprint dedicated to hospitality.
Informed by the writings of Simone Weil and Emmanuel Levinas, we understand the need for roots in order to protect a sense of connection to our work, our community, and our environment.
The paradoxical nature of comfort as a prison heightens our understanding of hospitality, and offers guidance on how to operate in a time of authoritarianism.
We’re looking for work that emphasizes the many-faceted nature of hospitality and kindness in all their forms, and holds the tension between necessity and extravagance, between security and insecurity in a time of empire decline.
We welcome personal stories of work, leisure, resistance, and survival, of looking for grace notes when they arrive, however they arrive. We will politely decline material that is preachy or overtly sloganized.
